Trainer Darby, jockey Mullings grab the spotlight at Caymanas
Trainer Ryan Darby and jockey Oneil Mullings were the toast at the races on Sunday as the formidable duo posted two winners to highlight the nine-race trophyless programme at Caymanas Park on Sunday.
The pair’s success started in the fourth race when six-year-old bay gelding Sir Kel made one move to win the three-year-old and upward Claiming ($750,000-$600,000) race over the five-furlong (1,000m) straight course. Sir Kel won by three lengths ahead of Minster Mandate and Buzz City Light in a time of 1:00.1.
Darby and Mullings then closed out their double in the ninth and final event when Brompton Alex came from off the pace to win the $1.02-million native-bred three-year-old and upward (non-winners of two)/imported three-year-old and upward (maiden) Restricted Allowance II event over five furlongs (1,000m) round. Brompton Alex got home by a length and three quarters ahead of She’s Fantastic and Bestdaughterinlaw in a time of 1:00.4.
With those winners, Darby pushed his tally for the season to 25 wins, while Mullings notched his 13th win for the year.
Also with two winners on the card was claiming apprentice Shavan Townsend. Townsend was successful in the opening event aboard Supreme Star for owner/trainer Adin Williams and Little Grovy Thing in the day’s seventh race for trainer Errol Burke.
Racing continues on Saturday, Jamaica Day, with the feature race being the second staging of the Jamaica Cup over nine-and-a-half furlongs (1,900m).
