MONTEGO BAY, St James — Herbert Morrison Technical retained both sections of the ISSA Western Conference boys’ basketball competition after completing 2-0 wins over St James High in the Under-19 section on Wednesday and Holland High in the Under-16 a day later in the best-of-three finals.

Herbert Morrison held off a determined St James High to secure a 10th-straight Under-19 title, winning Thursday’s game 70-68 at the Montego Bay Cricket Club while the Under-16 team won their game two 43-35 at Holland High on Thursday.

The St James team had won their first games on Monday, taking the Under-19 54-40 and the Under-16 51-31.

Meanwhile, Cornwall College took third place in the Under-16 after beating York Castle High 44-32 in the play-offs, and Holland High were third in the Under-19 by triumphing over York Castle 33-28.

As the scores indicate, Herbert Morrison faced tougher tests in the second games and in the Under-19 face-off on Wednesday found St James High more aggressive, thus they had to dig deep with double-doubles from Hubert Rodney and D’Aire Patterson to give them the edge.

Herbert Morrison led 13-9 after the first half but St James, who were led by a double-double from Jodel Williams, rallied to lead by two points (36-34) at half-time before the teams tied up at 51-51 going into the fourth quarter.

Led by Shemar Martin who had to sit out the last few minutes after spraining his ankle, Herbert Morrison led 61-58 with just over five minutes to go and increased that to five (70-65) with just under three minutes left. But, St James High had one last charge and came back to close the gap to just two points.

Unfortunately, Brown sat out the last two minutes after he fouled out of the match with a game-high 27 points.

Rodney scored 18 points and had 12 rebounds and five blocked shots for Herbert Morrison, Patterson scored 10 points and had 11 rebounds, Martin scored 24 points, while Daniel Clarke scored 11 points and Makhaya Morris had 12 rebounds.

Jodel Williams scored 13 points and had 12 steals for St James high while Keith Smith also scored 13 points and had eight rebounds.

On Thursday Holland High started well and led 16-10 after the first quarter and 27-20 at half-time, but were outscored 23-8 over the second half despite a double-double from Evair Hines.

Joshua Ferguson scored 16 points to lead Herbert Morrison, Kamu Dennis and Gabriel Scalmana both scored eight points, while Tevaughn Bernard scored six points.

Hines led all scorers with 17 points and had 12 rebounds and six blocked shots, Alleston Nelson scored eight points and had 10 steals, while Horraine Webster had nine steals and eight rebounds.
