Jamaica claimed the West Indies full bore shooting competition regional team match by one point over Guyana in the recently completed championship at Twickenham Park, St Catherine.

Captain Dwayne Ford of Jamaica also won the Wogarth Cup by scoring 146.10 points to nose out seven-time champion Lennox Braithwaite of Barbados, who scored 146.9.

It was a thrilling and exciting climax to the West Indies Full Bore Shooting Council Championship when Jamaica claimed the West Indies Cup and steadied their nerves against a hard-charging Guyana team.

Jamaica’s eight-person team, coached by Major John Nelson, also included team Captain Phillip Scott, Karen Anderson, Nicola Guy, Denis Lee, Jose Nunez, David Rickman, and Claude Russell.

After the first range at 300 yards Jamaica had a give-point lead (373.23) over their nearest rivals Antigua and Barbuda, with Guyana on 360.16. Ford and Guy shot impressively with perfect scores of 50.4 each.

Jamaica extended their lead after 500 yards with a score of 379.19. Guyana narrowed the gap and claimed victory at 500 yards, scoring 383.23. Heading into the final range, Jamaica were leading with 752.42 points to Guyana’s 743.39.

Braithwaite answered the call at 500 yards with a score of 50.3 that proved pivotal at the final range as he and Ford battled for the Wogarth Cup, awarded to the top-scoring shooter in the West Indies Cup.

At 600 yards, Jamaica were in a major shoot-out, but dropped 10 points at the outset. However, through steely nerves Jamaica held on to secure the victory over a hard-charging Guyana by one point, finishing with a total of 1,114.58 over Guyana, who shot 1,113.63.
