Lenny Hyde fired after latest JPL defeat
KINGSTON, Jamaica— One of the most successful coaches in the history of the Jamaica Premier League, Lenworth Hyde, told OBSERVER ONLINE he was fired by newcomer Chapelton FC following their 3-0 loss to Humble Lion on Sunday.
Hyde, who led Chapelton in gaining promotion to the premier league this season, says he was left confused and disappointed following the sacking.
“I received a call after the game from the chief executive officer and was told to resign, can you imagine?” Hyde questioned.
Efforts to reach a representative from Chapelton FC proved futile, but Hyde was left fuming at the decision.
“We played Humble Lion yesterday with just 13 players. I could only make two changes and I had to be careful because if they go on too early and someone got injured, we dead,” Hyde pointed out.
“It was 0-0 up to half time and Humble Lion made three changes and two of those persons scored,” he reported.
According to Hyde, the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) rule that says only five amateur players can play has severely crippled his club as he used mostly Clarendon College players and most of them do not want to sign a contract for several reasons including scholarships.
“These are the guys that I used to gain promotion so what are we supposed to do? I believe the CEO has jumped the gun,” Hyde opined.
“We not doing bad in the league. It is not like we in the relegation zone,” he added.
Chapelton Maroons are currently sitting in the 11th spot in the 14-team Jamaica Premier League with eight points from 10 games inclusive of two wins, two draws and six defeats.
Hyde won the Premier League as head coach of Hazard United (now Portmore United) in the 2002-03 season, Harbour View in 2006-07, and Tivoli Gardens in 2008-09.
He also led Clarendon College to another dominating season – winning the daCosta Cup and the all-island Olivier Shield titles. He also masterminded the All daCosta All-Star to victory over their counterparts.
