Two wins for MoBay COMETS, Mt Alvernia High at Western Relays

Two wins each by MoBay COMETS and Mt Alvernia High School highlighted western Jamaica’s performance at Saturday’s 44th staging of the Milo Western Relays, held at GC Foster sports college in Angels, St Catherine.

MoBay COMETS won the men’s Medley Relays Open and Lamario Wright won the men’s 3,000m — the first event of the day that was marked by some outstanding competition throughout the day.

The Montego Bay-based Hemmingay Prep School won both the boys’ and the girls’ prep school 4x100m relays.

It was MoBay COMETS’ first win at the meet for the first time in many years as they clocked 3:35.92 seconds to finish ahead of two schoolboys’ teams — Excelsior High and Vere Technical High.

Wright got the meet going when he won the men’s 3,000m in fine style, running 9:39.83 seconds.

Anchored by a fine run from Mickhaela Phang, Mt Alvernia High held off a late charge from Holmwood Technical and Edwin Allen High, clocking 49.03 seconds, the fastest time by a Class 4 girls’ relay team so far this year.

Aaliyah Foster warmed up for this weekend’s Western Champs by winning the women’s long jump with a season’s best 5.76m (-3.4m/s) after a subpar performance at last month’s Grace/STETHS Invitational in Santa Cruz, St Elizabeth.

Herbert Morrison Technical’s Deandre Daley showed off his form when he cruised to a wind-aided 10.42 seconds (2.1m/s) to win the men’s 100m Open, while Green Island’s Tyrese Ebanks took the men’s 400m Open in 49.34 seconds.

In the prep school relays, Hemmingay got the better of St James Prep in both the boys’ and the girls’ sections.

The boys ran 57.81 seconds to St James Prep’s 1:02.43 seconds while the girls ran 1:03.30 seconds to St James Prep’s 1:04.60 seconds.

Barracks Road Primary were second in the primary boys’ 4x100m behind Spanish Town High.

Cornwall College had a number of podium places, placing second in the Class 1 4x200m where they finished behind winners Excelsior High and ahead of Muschett High, and were runners-up again in the Class 2 4x200m, behind Kingston College.

Cornwall College’s Class 2 4x100m team were third behind Excelsior High and Edwin Allen while their 4x400m team placed fifth in 3:21.11 seconds.

Lansford Cunningham was also second in the men’s long jump with a season’s best 6.74m while Obrien Bowen was fourth in 6.37m.

Mt Alvernia High also ran a school record 4:00.85 seconds for third in the girls’ 4x400m Open.
