Gov’t earmarks $8.7-m for agriculture competitiveness project
KINGSTON, Jamaica – The Government’s Agricultural Competitiveness Programme Bridging Project has been given an allocation of just over $8.7 million in the upcoming fiscal year.
The project, which began in December 2017, aims to place the country in a competitive position to fully exploit the market potential that exists for Jamaican fresh produce locally and internationally.
As of December 2022, work had commenced on the installation of pumping works at the Spring Plain agro park, a nursery comprising 70 acres of mango planting materials was established, and two shade houses at the Bodles Research Station that support the mango development programme were rehabilitated.
For the 2023/24 fiscal year, it is anticipated that the final contractual payment for works will be facilitated and completed.
The project is being implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries.
