Kingstonian wins Montego Bay leg of SVL domino tournament

ST JAMES, Jamaica- Gerry Gardener, a Kingston resident, walked away with the $150,000 prize money at the inaugural staging of Supreme Ventures Limited (SVL) Supreme Domino Masters series.

The event which was held at Pier One in Montego Bay on Sunday, saw scores of players vying for the top prize, but Gardener who emerged as the winner on the day, said he expected the victory.

“Mi know mi a probably the better domino player of all who enter and it just play out that the right man win,” he told OBSERVER ONLINE after collecting his cheque from a SVL representative.

Gardener, who is now set to compete in the national grand finals scheduled to be held at the National Arena in Kingston on June 11, is already putting the other contestants on their guard.

“In the final and me going to win it, look out fi mi in a the final,” he remarked, referring to his prospects in the finals.

However before that happens, he will be joined by 15 other contestants from six other community-based championships which will be held across the island. The next such event will be held at Miggies Sports Bar in Spanish Town on Sunday.

For the national finals, Gardener will compete to win the huge $1 million cash prize that will be on offer.

Dwayne Tulloch, senior vice president in charge of retail and operations says the competition forms part of the move to “bring back good vibes into our communities.”

“Our objective is to connect back to communities, go back to the grassroots reality of Jamaica. Domino is something that’s played and appreciated by everyone and we’re just trying to bring back that original Jamaican vibes back to our communities,” he said.

The event at Pier 1, he noted, had about 100 participants.

“We had a hundred participants but we were aiming for 200. However, we expect to see the figures increasing as we move into the other communities,” he stated.
