Innis grabs 100th career win at Caymanas

ST CATHERINE, Jamaica – Despite trainer Patrick Lynch saddling three winners, including Atlantic Convoy in the $1.02 million Milligram Trophy feature race, it was jockey Jerome Innis who took the spotlight after booting home his 100th career win on the nine-race programme at Caymanas Park on Saturday.

Innis, who had been on 99 winners for a couple of race days, achieved the personal milestone aboard the Owen Sharpe-conditioned Kwaku in the seventh race, a maiden condition race for native-bred five-year-olds and upward over five-and-a-half furlongs (1,100m).

Kwaku, a five-year-old bay horse, running for the first time, sat behind the pace as he watched Dr Sahir Alexander (Natalie Berger) lead the field ahead of Crushing Power (Richard Henry) and Mardele (Ramon Nepare) going into the half-mile (800m).

When asked to run by Innis in deep stretch, the Casual Trick-Darlin offspring powered away from rivals to win by eight lengths at the wire, beating Galway Bay (Leroy Walters) and Flame Carrier (Javaniel Patterson) in the process. The final time for the race was 1:12.0.

Meanwhile, the three-year-old American-bred chestnut colt Atlantic Convoy, took up the running from five furlongs (1,000m) out and dominated rivals by 4 ½ lengths in winning the Restricted Allowance II contest for native-bred three-year-olds and upward (non-winners of two) and imported three-year-olds and upward (maidens) over seven-and-a-half furlongs (1,500m). Ridden by champion Dane Dawkins, Atlantic Convoy won ahead of Anonymous (Tevin Foster) in a time of 1:33.2.

Lynch’s other winners were Freedom Street (Javaniel Patterson) in the second race and Sure Curlin (Ramon Nepare) in the very next race. While Dawkins earlier won aboard Nomoredeals for trainer Gresford Smith for two winners on the day, Patterson, in addition to Lynch’s Freedom Street, won the ninth and final event aboard the Andrew McDonald-trained Loose Cannon for a double.

Smith also saddled a double as his charge Takes Two To Tango, ridden by Tevin Foster, won the sixth race. Also, Foster opened the card with Kissmet for trainer Steven Todd for his double as well.
