Major crimes dip by 27 per cent in Westmoreland Police Division
WESTMORELAND, Jamaica – Members of the Westmoreland Police Division have been hailed for their sterling performance which has resulted in a 27 per cent reduction in major crimes so far this year over the corresponding period in 2022.
“Since the start of this year your (Westmoreland Police Division) murders are 34 per cent below last year’s figure – 23 versus 35; shooting, 10 per cent below – 26 versus 29; rape, 79 per cent below – nine versus two; and robbery, 23 per cent below – 10 versus 13,” stated Assistant Commissioner of Police Clifford Chambers, head of Area One Police Division.
“The grand total reduction now stands at 27 per cent over the same period last year which (is) five per cent point below the existing national average of 22 per cent,” he added.
Chambers also gave kudos to the cops for their seizure of 10 illegal firearms since the start of the year, which is four more than the six seized over the similar period last year.
He was speaking at the Westmoreland Police Division awards banquet held in the parish Saturday night.
Zavia Mayne, Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security, also lauded the Westmoreland police for their sterling contribution.
“This (Saturday) evening, we have gathered here to acknowledge and celebrate the exceptional achievements of some of the most dedicated and committed members of the Westmoreland Division of the Jamaica Constabulary Force. These individuals and departments have gone above and beyond in their efforts to keep our communities safe, and they are truly deserving of our recognition and praise,” Mayne said.
He added that “they have exemplified the highest standards of integrity, commitment, and excellence in their work, and we are here today to show our gratitude and appreciation for their service”.
