I Am Fred goes for four straight
While all attention will be focused on the 1000 Guineas as the native-bred three-year-old fillies begin their Classic campaign, a three-year-old and upwards Graded Stakes event involving the much-improved foreigner I Am Fred is the perfect supporting event on tomorrow’s (June 3, 2023) nine-race card.
I Am Fred will compete against six other runners going nine furlongs and 25 yards for a purse of $1.5 million.
Interestingly, leading and champion trainer Jason DaCosta, in addition to I Am Fred, saddles three more runners: Miniature Man, She’s My Destiny, and King Arthur.
The other three runners are trained by Gary Subratie. He has Sistren Treasure, Big Big Daddy, and Calculus to set up a battle between two of the three top leading trainers at present.
Below, The Supreme Racing takes a closer look at each runner and their chances of winning.
1. SISTREN TREASURE (USA): (3 b f by Brethren – Katira) – Finished a good third behind Runaway Algo and Calculus in the Seeking My Dream Trophy over 7 ½ furlongs (1,500m) on May 20. Sistren Treasure will have to run out of her skin if she is to win this one.
2. BIG BIG DADDY: (6 dkb g by Natural Selection – Just A Flutter) – Has been struggling to find form as of late. Big Big Daddy races way above his grade and is therefore not expected to trouble the main runners.
3. I AM FRED (USA): (5 b g by Golden Lad – Happy Hailey) – One of the most-improved horses in training at present. Slowly but surely, I Am Fred worked his way up to the top grade with impressive performances, completing a hat-trick of wins to remain unbeaten this season. His last victory came in The Viceroy Trophy over one mile (1,600m) on April 22, where he defeated Calculus by a length and three quarters in a time of 1:38.2. I Am Fred will also go well going two-turns and should put away rivals once again. But he allows weight all-round, with the exception of Calculus, which could be I Am Fred’s only hurdle to success in this one.
4. MINIATURE MAN: (5 ch g by Northern Giant – Runway Gal) – Was a winner over 9 furlongs (1,800m) on May 13. While Miniature Man has regained form, repeating here is going to be a very difficult task for him, especially stepping up in class.
5. CALCULUS: (5 b h by Sensational Slam – Trinket Box) – Consistent sort who looks likely to be the one to give I Am Fred most to do. Calculus was beaten by I Am Fred in The Viceroy run on April 22 and since then, Calculus has been working well for this and is going to make a telling bid for top honours.
6. SHE’S MY DESTINY: (5 ch m by Bern Identity – Woman Is Boss) – Easily won the Lady Geeta Trophy by 3 ¼ lengths in a time of 1:13.1 over 6 furlongs (1,200m) on May 6. The circular course might present a little challenge for She’s My Destiny but the speedster is expected to create some damage on the front end.
7. KING ARTHUR: (6 b g by Natural Selection – Geisha Art) – Has no chance of winning.
