UHWI puts breast health in focus on National Mammography Day
KINGSTON, Jamaica — The University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI) is reaffirming its commitment to early detection, accessible screening and comprehensive breast cancer care as it hosts its National Mammography Day Health Expo and Outdoor Broadcast at the hospital’s Undercroft on Friday.
Held under the theme “Every Story is Unique. Every Journey Matters”, the event brings together breast cancer survivors, patients, healthcare professionals and members of the public to promote early detection, encourage screening and highlight the importance of continued support for women affected by breast cancer.
The event was officially opened by UHWI’s newly appointed Acting Chief Executive Officer, Errol Greene. Delivering the welcome address, Medical Chief of Staff Dr Carl Bruce highlighted the hospital’s commitment to ensuring that women across Jamaica have access to quality breast healthcare, regardless of where they live.
“At UHWI, we believe in early detection, but our commitment does not end with screening. We have an excellent team of healthcare professionals, world-class equipment and a responsibility to stand with women throughout their journey. Whether you are from Kingston or any other corner of Jamaica, we are here to screen you, treat you and support you,” Dr Bruce said.
The event offers free mammograms (conditions apply), alongside free general health checks, breast health education, informational booths and opportunities for members of the public to interact directly with healthcare professionals.
UHWI continues to strengthen its breast imaging and diagnostic services through advanced technology, including 3D mammography, breast ultrasound and image-guided biopsy procedures. These services are integral to the hospital’s approach to early identification, accurate diagnosis and timely clinical intervention.
The initiative has received significant sponsorship and support from corporate partners, including Aventa, Home Choice and the National Health Fund (NHF), alongside contributions from several UHWI departments.
