Rugby teams join hunt for medals
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador — Jamaica’s men’s (Crocs) and women’s (Lady Crocs) Rugby Sevens teams will be looking to add to the country’s medal tally at the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games here when they contest the semi-finals of their respective events today.
The Crocs, who have rebounded brilliantly after their shocking opening game defeat to Mexico, will play Colombia in their final preliminary round game which will help to decide placings for the semi-finals.
The match is scheduled to start at 8:30 am (9:30 am Jamaica time). The Lady Crocs will face Colombia in their semi-final match at 9:30 am (10:30 Jamaica time). The final of both events will be contested this afternoon.
Crocs endured mixed results in their matches on Monday. They started the day by thrashing the Cayman Islands 38-0 before drawing 14-14 with Bermuda. However, an hour later the Jamaicans rebounded to beat Venezuela 12-0 in their final match of the day.
Captain of the Crocs team, Conan Osbourne said they are confident ahead of today’s semi-final contest.
“We knew we had to win that game against Venezuela so the boys put their bodies on the line; and so if we keep doing that then our rugby is going to take us to the gold medal,” said Osbourne.
“I think that the boys are excited about what is in front of them, and you could see the smiles of their faces after that victory against Venezuela so I know that they are confident and ready to go,” he said.
The Lady Crocs will enter the contest on the back of a 31-21 victory over Caribbean rivals Trinidad and Tobago and a 29-0 win over Costa Rica on Monday.
Head Coach Hughton Campbell said it is going to be a difficult match for the Jamaicans but he is confident that once the team plays to their strengths then victory against top seed Colombia is achievable.
“It is going to be a very tough mountain for us to climb because we played them before and they got the better of us…but the girls are a lot more focused and they’re ready to go,” said Campbell.
“It is going to be a tough challenge but we have risen to every challenge since we got ourselves organised and so I am quite optimistic about beating them in this,” he declared.
The match is scheduled to start at 9:30 am (10:30 am Jamaica time).
