WATCH: Mourners ditch cars, opt to carry caskets amid heavy downpour in St Catherine
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica – A heavy downpour on Sunday forced several groups of mourners en route to Meadowrest Memorial Gardens in St Catherine to abandon their cars, as they sought to comply with local laws as it relates to burial.
At approximately 5:00 pm, at least three separate groups of mourners were observed walking along Red Pond Road with caskets.
The heavy downpour of rain resulted in serious traffic congestion in the area forcing some drivers, including those of hearses, to abandon their vehicles along the road.
Explaining the bizarre display of several men walking with caskets atop their heads, family members noted that it was a race against time to lay to rest their deceased loved ones at the burial grounds as, under Jamaican law, burials must be done by 6:00 pm or it will have to be moved to another day.
