Lightning strike during D’Cup hospitalises four

The Jamaica Observer understands that four persons who were struck by lightning during a Zone J game between Dinthill Technical and Charlemont High School in the ISSA/WATA daCosta Cup match on Tuesday afternoon were still being treated at press time.

The game was being played at Charlemont High in St Catherine and had to be halted around the 25th minute when three Dinthill players and an assistant referee were struck. They were taken to the Linstead Hospital in the parish.

The incident is the second of its kind in recent seasons, as a game between Wolmer’s Boys’ and Jamaica College in the ISSA/Digicel Manning Cup at Stadium East in Kingston was stopped after five players were also hit by lightning on Monday, September 16, 2019.

Elsewhere in the daCosta Cup on Tuesday, former champions Glenmuir High, and Rusea’s High, as well as Knox College ran their records to three-straight wins.

Glenmuir High romped to a 16-0 thrashing of Porus High in their Zone L game, Rusea’s High were 5-0 winners over Merlene Ottey High in Zone B, while Knox College edged Christiana High 2-1 in Zone G.

At Glenmuir High yesterday, the home team went on a scoring spree, led by hat tricks from Derrick Henry and Tajaun Cummings as Porus have now conceded 34 goals in just two games after they lost 18-0 to Denbigh High last week.

Denbigh High won their second-straight, blanking Central High 5-0 as last year’s beaten finalists have now lost back-to-back games to start the season.

In Zone A Cornwall College came from a goal down at half-time to beat Green Pond High 3-1 while Maldon High won back-to-back games, edging Spot Valley High 4-3.

Daville Williams headed Green Pond into the lead in the third minute but Cornwall responded in the second half with goals from Dane Buckley, Dante Escoffery and Trimane Bradshaw.

Nickoy Stewart, Kenrick Thorpe, Leonardo Crossbourne all scored for Maldon High after they took the lead through an own goal.

Green Island got their first win of the season, blanking Cambridge High 6-0 while there were 3-0 wins for St Mary Technical, Enid Bennett and Black River High over Iona High, Ewarton High ad Grange Hill, respectively.

On Wednesday, defending champions Clarendon College and former winners Garvey Maceo, and St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) are included in a group of eight schools who will hope to extend their perfect start to three games when the competition continues on Wednesday with 20 games.

Clarendon College will be away to Claude McKay High at Effortville Community Centre, and are expected to take all three points against the team that lost both previous games.

Garvey Maceo have scored nine goals in their two wins but could have their hands full against Vere Technical, who beat Kemps Hill 2-0 in their only game played so far.

STETHS, who trail BB Coke on goal-difference, will host Newell High in Santa Cruz, while BB Coke hosts Maggotty High and both are looking to continue on their winning ways.

Edwin Allen High, Cedric Titus, Belair High, Manchester High and Morant Bay High are also on the hunt for a third-straight win.

Tuesday’s results:
