More foreigners come in to boost competitiveness for 2023 lucrative Mouttet Mile
With four more foreigners looking to occupy stalls for the second staging of the Mouttet Mile, Racing Secretary Denzil Miller says this will sure boost the competitiveness to unprecedented heights.
Easy As ABC and Propellant are the two entrants that have already confirmed for the Mouttet Mile, while the new foreigners are Wall Street Trader, trained by Rowan Mathie; American Tap, trained by Howard Jaghia; and Rough Entry and Spirit of Light, both trained by Rohan Crichton.
Wall Street Tader and American Tap have already arrived on the island, while both Rough Entry and Spirit of Light are yet to arrive.
“It is very exciting to have the overseas-bead horses here for the Mouttet Mile. The ultimate goal of course is to create the richest race in the Caribbean which we have the purse for US$150,000, and at a mile the competition is very hot,” Miller told the Jamaica Observer‘s The Supreme Racing Guide.
“The sprinters will try to carry the stayers for a very long way and the middle-distance runners will also have a great shot of winning. We achieve this year a milestone of attracting six horses that have not been domicile in Jamaica since January 1 to actually have their ultimate goal of participating,” Miller added.
Wall Street Trader, who was foaled on April 15, 2029, is bred by Vancover – Selva and has won two races, finished second three times and third twice from 21 starts.
American Tap, who was foaled on April 20, 2017, is bred by Tapiture – American Castle and has won four races, finished second four times and third six times from 20 starts.
Rough Entry, who was foaled on April 30, 2017, is bred by Poseidon’s Warrior – Dixie Ocean and has won eight races, finished second three times and third three times from 34 starts.
Spirit of Light, who was foaled on October 12, 2017, is bred by Sebi Halo – Bilboa and has won five races, finished second five times, and third two times from 25 starts.
“There are four slots for overseas horses. There’s a lot more racing to go and so we expect the numbers and earnings to keep changing between now and the final entry list just about two weeks before the Mouttet Mile.
“Of the six horses, we saw one in action about two weeks ago which was Easy as ABC. He is a winner of two winners on the Gulfstream circuit but he was winless in his first race here. He [is] back on the exercise track doing pretty good from what the reports have shown us.
“It is early days yet, but the great thing and the great achievement for us is that we were able to attract owners. They share our vision in creating and continuing to grow our sport here in Jamaica by investing in horses from the United States and have them been purchased and prepared specifically for this engagement.
“We are looking forward to this race and it is going to be an amazing race day. And our chairman said, we are going to be a part of a unique Pick-5 betting and, of course, the live stream of the Mouttet Mile on Fox5. That alone gives you goosebumps.
“To achieve something like this is real a huge thing and the team here has worked hard in terms of getting this dream come true and who knows, as we go long it will become better and better each year.”
The Mouttet Mile (invitational), a Grade One event for three-year-olds and upwards going a mile (1,600m), will carry a purse of US$150,000 ($22,500,000), which is the richest single purse event in the English-speaking Caribbean.
