STETHS, Glenmuir, BB Coke register second-round wins in d’Cup
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Former champions St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) and Glenmuir High as well as BB Coke were winners on Friday as the second round of the ISSA/Wata daCosta Cup football competition got underway.
STETHS escaped with a 1-0 win over Irwin High, Glenmuir High beat Morant Bay High 3-0, while BB Coke got the better of Paul Bogle High 2-0.
STETHS were made to work hard in their game but an 85th minute penalty from Donte Campbell was the difference as they took the lead back to Santa Cruz going into Tuesday’s return leg game.
Antwone Smith led a quick STETHS counter attack but he was cut down just inside the Irwin penalty area and Campbell stepped up and gave his team the lead. STETHS’ head coach Omar ‘Rambo’ Wedderburn was happy with the outcome and told Observer Online that, “it’s always good when you travel and get three points, this was what we came here for to be honest, the three points, we have another 90 minutes and that will start at 0-0 for us, we are very conscious of that fact.”
Norman Foster, the Irwin High coach, agreed it was a tough game to lose but said they have seen enough of the STETHS team to give them hope in the next round.
“It’s not all lost, I think we put up a good fight against a good team but we have to bounce back in the second leg.” It was Irwin’s first loss of the season and Foster said they had seen enough to know they can prevail.
Orane Watson scored a double to lead Glenmuir High to their easy win, while Deandre Johnson scored the other goal.
Results from Friday’s games:
