Dane Nelson secures second international jockeys’ title
JAMAICAN jockey Dane “Warrior Chief” Nelson won his second international jockeys’ championship title after dominating the riders in the one-month race meet at Century Downs in Calgary, Canada.
Nelson finished on 18 winners in the September 9-October 29 race meet. He was five winners clear of N’Rico Prescod and Jose Asencio, both tied on 13 winners each. Antonio Whitehall (11 winners) and Keihton (11 winners) rounded off the top-five riders in the standing.
Nelson attributed his continued success in the saddle to his hard work, confidence, and dedication to the sport.
“What can I say? I am just happy and grateful for everything at the moment. This is an amazing feeling. I mean, two championship titles in one year is just magnificent. This shows off the hard work and dedication that I have put into the profession,” Nelson told the Jamaica Observer‘s The Complete Racing Guide.
“I am riding with a lot of confidence, and that really helped me. Thanks to everyone for their support. Thanks to the owners, trainers, fellow riders, grooms — everyone for everything. I will continue to do the hard work as success only comes with hard work,” Nelson said.
Nelson has 61 victories from 258 mounts in North America so far this year. Nelson, in addition to this jockeys’ title, had won his first title at Century Mile in Edmonton on September 1, to add to his four titles from Jamaica.
Nelson has now won six championships as a jockey.
