A winning debut for Oh So Smart
Oh So Smart, a two-year-old chestnut filly by Soul Warrior out of the Nuclear Wayne mare Patchwork, made an impressive debut on Sunday, December 10, 2023, winning the annual renewal of the Starters’ Trophy.
While she was not expected to win the maiden special weight race for native-bred two-year-olds at four furlongs (800m), Oh So Smart won by four-and-a-half lengths on a canter. Oh So Smart, owned by Garth Samuels, won with a time of 49.3 (23.3).
Oh So Smart showed good speed at the start of the race as the Steven Todd trainee kept pace with stablemate Kencia (Dane Dawkins), favourite Immeasurable Joy (Raddesh Roman), and Brownie Brown (Bebeto Harvey).
When jockey Tevin Foster asked Oh So Smart to take up the running, the chestnut filly surged to the front of the pack crossing the dummy rails, cruising home effortlessly at the wire. Brownie Brown was second and Kencia finished in third place.
