A rare winner in Jamaica for jockey Chris Douglas
LOCAL jockey Christopher Douglas, who is visiting from Canada, notched his first win for the season when he piloted
Rashid to victory in the $700,000 Intrestntimesahead (champion two-year-old for 2023) Trophy on Saturday, February 24, 2024.
The race was a three-year-old and upward Optional Claiming ($520,000-$200,000) spread that included six-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) and native-bred five-year-olds (maidens) over seven furlongs (1,400m).
Douglas broke Rashid well, as the seven-year-old chestnut horse led the field ahead of Sunshine Cat (Robert Halledeen) and Last Hoorah (Richard Henry) down the backstretch.
Rashid maintained his gallop and began to increase his lead going into the half-mile (800m) turn ahead of Sunshine Cat, with Prince Dominick (Omar Walker) getting into the mix as he approached the distance.
Despite going wide in the deep stretch, the Errol Subratie-trained Rashid proved too strong for rivals, winning by a length and a quarter ahead of Biblical Legend (Tevin Foster) and Sunshine Cat at the wire. The winning time was 1:31.4 (25.1 x 50.1 x 1:16.2).
