ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC) — Windward Islands Volcanoes remained the only unbeaten side after the third round of matches in the West Indies Championship wrapped up last weekend.

They thrashed Combined Campuses and Colleges (CC) by eight wickets at Chedwin Park in Jamaica on Saturday, to log their third win in as many matches and move to 62.2 points.

Volcanoes beat Jamaica Scorpions by nine wickets in their opening game at Sabina Park in Jamaica before also whipping Barbados Pride by nine wickets at the same venue in the second round.

Volcanoes’ success has been shaped so far by their lethal bowling attack which has been spearheaded by fast bowlers Ryan John (15 wickets) and Shamar Springer (14), with support from rookie leg-spinner Daren Cyrus (10).

Sunil Ambris’s scintillating hundred in the last round has saw him move to the top of the run-scoring charts for Volcanoes with 237 runs.

Opener Jeremy Solozano (215) is the other batsman with in excess of 200 runs for the leaders.

Meanwhile, less than two points separate Leeward Islands Hurricanes and Barbados Pride in second and third, respectively, both teams having won two and lost one.

Hurricanes, who beat Trinidad and Tobago Red Force by four wickets at Warner Park in St Kitts last weekend, have 45.6 points while Pride, who defeated Scorpions by four wickets at Sabina Park, are close behind on 43.8.

For Scorpions, the defeat was their second of the campaign, leaving them fourth on 29.6.

Red Force are fifth on 27.6 while Guyana Harpy Eagles lie sixth on 26.4 points after pulling off a record 221-run victory over West Indies Academy in the last round, to post their first victory of the season.

The Academy are one from bottom on 24 points while CCC are bottom on 14.6 as the only side without a win.

The fourth round of matches bowl off March 13 following a near two-week break.
