Restaurateur Leon Ellis: From Longsville, Clarendon to Harlem, USA
Leon Ellis was born and raised in the picturesque town of Longsville, nestled in the heart of Clarendon, Jamaica. As the youngest of 12 children to Oscar and Emily Ellis, Leon was raised in a household marked by discipline, resourcefulness, and a profound appreciation for the land.
Growing up on a sprawling 60-acre farm, Ellis learned the value of self-sufficiency and the importance of wholesome, organic living. His upbringing instilled in him a deep-rooted passion for healthy eating, a passion that would later manifest in his entrepreneurial endeavours.
A move to the United States and enrolment at Tuskegee University in Alabama where he studied food science and nutrition allowed him him to fulfil his dream of opening his first eatery, Emily’s Restaurant and Bar, in 1992, paying homage to his mum Emily. Situated in East Harlem, Emily’s quickly gained acclaim, cementing Harlem’s reputation as a thriving business locale.
Seeking to expand his culinary repertoire, Ellis ventured into barbecue with the launch of Oscar’s Famous BBQ, named after his father. This endeavour brought authentic Texas-style barbecue to the heart of Harlem, reflecting his deep-rooted family values and culinary expertise.
Today Executive Chef Leon Ellis shares his latest venture, Chocolat Restaurant and Bar in Harlem, with Thursday Food, a beloved dining destination renowned for its rich brown décor, large windows, and deep chocolate interior accented with shades of Tiffany blue. Located on Frederick Douglass Blvd and 120th Street in Harlem, NYC, it offers a menu featuring delicately updated soul food, American comfort dishes, and Southern cuisine.
Open for brunch, lunch, dinner, and happy hour, Chocolat Restaurant and Bar provides a warm and inviting atmosphere, making it a favourite spot in the West Harlem neighbourhood.
