Sasso scores big at Ranger’s Sporting Clays

The tranquil Tru-Juice orchards were once again the stage for Ranger’s Sporting Club’s annual clay shooting tournament, which returned on Sunday for another triumphant year.

Organised by the Ranger’s Gun Club and sponsored by Sterling Asset Management, this event has become a staple in the sport shooting calendar, drawing an unprecedented crowd this year. Approximately 150 shooters participated, demonstrating skill and sportsmanship, while competing in various classes and team events.

Defending champions Craig Simpson and Wendy McMaster were among the favourites, the venue being a proven ground of past triumphs. Yet it was Christian Sasso, who emerged as the High Overall (HOA) champion, scoring an impressive 91 after a shoot-off, with Chad Ziadie following closely as the runner-up.

Notably, Aliana McMaster, daughter of Wendy McMaster and a rising star in the sport, scored a total of 86, placing first in the Ladies and second in the Juniors. Aliana is a member of the Ranger’s Gun Club; she recently made history as the first Jamaican and the first female participant to secure a medal in any category within the European circuit in 2023, showcasing the international prowess and talent emerging from the club.

Angie Ammar, event organiser and member of Ranger’s Gun Club, expressed her gratitude for the robust turnout and the steadfast support from the partners.

“The 2024 Ranger’s Sporting Clay shooting tournament, now in its third year, has firmly established itself as a premium event within the sport shooting community,” said Ammar.

“Ranger’s Gun Club, often described as a large ‘family’, celebrated its most successful year yet as evidenced by the impressive turnout of friends and spectators. We extend a heartfelt thank you to Sterling for their ongoing commitment and support. The sponsorship was phenomenal, both from within the club and from external supporters. We are deeply grateful for the support and appreciate the tireless efforts of all those who worked to make the event a great success,” she added.

Michelle Valentine, AVP, marketing and communications at Sterling Asset Management, also highlighted the alignment of values between the club and the sponsor.

“As sponsors, we are honoured to be a part of this distinguished gathering, celebrating the dedication and sportsmanship that define the Ranger’s and other clubs. Your commitment to excellence, safety, and professionalism is commendable and aligns closely with our values at Sterling Asset Management. We believe in supporting endeavours that foster community engagement, healthy competition, and the pursuit of excellence, which is why we are proud to stand alongside you as sponsors of this prestigious event,” said Valentine.

The success of this year’s tournament not only highlights the skill of Jamaica’s top shooters but also cements the Ranger’s Sporting Clay Shoot as a highlight of the national sports calendar, anticipated by enthusiasts and families alike.
