JPL qualifiers to be decided Sunday
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Racing United and Chapelton Maroons will carry leads into Sunday’s return leg semi-finals of the Jamaica Football Federation Championship where the two teams to be promoted to next season’s Jamaica Premier League (JPL) will be decided.
Racing United take a 2-0 lead into their game against Reno FC at Llandilo Sports Complex while Chapelton Maroons lead Tru-Juice 2-1 going into their game at Turners Oval, in Chapelton, Clarendon.
Both games are set to start at 3:00pm and the winners on aggregate will qualify for the JPL’s 2024-25 season set to start later this year, replacing the relegated Treasure Beach FC and Lime Hall Academy.
The first legs were played last Sunday and Racing United, who topped the points tables in the regular season as they did a year ago but failed to get past the semi-finals, will hope to get it right Sunday after beating Reno FC at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex with a Reno own goal in the 14th minute and a goal by Deandre Johnson in the 63rd, his seventh of the season.
It was another own goal at the Bramwell Clarke Complex that gave Chapelton the lead in the 48th minute before Shamar Martin equalised in the 88th minute for Tru-Juice FC with his second goal of the season.
Neshawn Bennett, however, scored the winner in the 90th minute to give Chapelton Maroons the lead. Chapelton Maroons spent one season in the Premier League, 2022-23, when they lost to Faulkland FC of St James in the final of the first JFF Tier II competition but both teams were relegated at the end of the season.
