Subratie holds keys to victory in Trevor McKenzie Trophy feature
TODAY’S $1.25-million Trevor McKenzie Trophy is shaping up to be a thrilling contest as second-generation trainer Gary Subratie holds a strong hand with top contenders Money Market and Digital One.
The Restricted Allowance event, featuring three-year-olds and upward, will be run over five furlongs (1,000m) on the round course, providing a perfect platform for these talented horses to showcase their skills.
Money Market, a consistent performer, has finished second and third in his two starts at this level, demonstrating his ability to compete with this company. His latest effort on August 3 saw him finish third by a length behind Madelyn’s Sunshine and Press Conference, in a time of 1:07.1 — a performance that hinted at even better things to come.
With a strong training session under his belt, clocking 1:02.3 for five furlongs on September 8,
Money Market is primed for success and looks to be the one to beat.
Digital One, on the other hand, has shown promise with five starts this season, finishing second twice and third three times. Although she’s yet to score a win, her latest effort on August 31 — finishing third by 3¼ lengths behind Money Miser and Power From Above — suggests she’s ready to break through.
The addition of a tongue tie and figure 8 equipment could be the key to unlocking her potential, and Subratie’s expertise will undoubtedly help her reach new heights.
The race is positioned as the ninth and final event on the day with a post time of 5:20 pm. First race is at high noon.
While Money Market and Digital One are the clear front-runners in the Trevor McKenzie Trophy, a trio of Mrs Lyndhurst, Burlap, and Oasis Jak are lurking in the shadows, ready to pounce if the favourites should falter.
Mrs Lyndhurst, a consistent performer, finished a close third on September 7, just a length and three-quarters behind Norblar and Volatility. With her speed and versatility, she’s going to make a telling bid here.
Burlap, meanwhile, showed promise on August 31 going one mile (1,600m), leading the pack for most of the way before fading in the stretch. But don’t write him off— he’s better suited to the shorter distance and will likely be more competitive this time around.
And then there’s Oasis Jak who made a valiant effort on August 31, losing by only a half-length to Bern Notice in her first attempt at a mile. Now reverting to sprinting, where she truly shines, Oasis Jak is poised to make a major impact.
