Bottled water quality is a serious matter
Dear Editor,
I am writing in response to the recent article entitled ‘SRC calls for enhanced testing in bottled water industry’ published in the Jamaica Observer on October 9, 2024 regarding concerns about water quality from bottled water producers and at refill stations.
This is a serious matter, as UNICEF indicates that globally 829,000 people die each year from diseases directly attributable to unsafe water, inadequate sanitation, and poor hygiene practices. While the role of the Scientific Research Council (SRC) and the Bureau of Standards Jamaica (BSJ) in testing water quality is vital, it is crucial to highlight that bottled water producers and refill stations cannot rely solely on these entities for comprehensive quality assurance.
To truly safeguard public health, all bottlers and refill station operators must implement robust daily sanitation procedures and conduct daily in-house testing. These practices not only enhance the safety of the water provided but also instil confidence in consumers.
At Lifespan Spring Water we understand the importance of rigorous quality control. Our facilities are equipped with established sanitation protocols that are strictly adhered to and no cost is spared in investing in the necessary equipment. In addition to our daily internal testing, we also conduct weekly external assessments and engage in annual international testing. This comprehensive approach has not only ensured the safety of our water but has also earned us five International Quality Awards and an international Superior Taste Award.
We believe that all players in the market should adopt similar practices to ensure the highest standards of water quality. The additional cost should be seen as an investment in maintaining the health of our nation. By taking responsibility for their own testing and sanitation, suppliers can protect their customers and contribute to a healthier community.
