11 must-haves for your Jamaican Christmas dinner

Tis’ the season when arguably most diets are put on pause and individuals indulge in every delectable delight. Still, there are a few items that are a ‘must-have’ at a traditional Christmas dinner in Jamaica. Would Christmas even be the same without a succulent glazed ham or some shelly gungo rice and peas?

If you’re planning your festive feast and want to make sure your table is brimming with holiday classics, Observer Online has put together a checklist of 11 essential dishes you won’t want to overlook.

Glazed Ham: It’s not Christmas without a well marinated, thoroughly glazed and perfectly baked ham. It’s basically the centrepiece for any traditional holiday dinner. Whether pork or chicken, this dish will have everyone reaching for seconds.

Pork: Whether you prefer it jerked, roasted or stewed, pork is an essential dish during the holiday season in Jamaica. Its savoury flavour complements a variety of sides, making it a close second to ham and helping to make your Christmas dinner much more satisfying.

Chicken: Served however you like it, chicken is an essential addition to the Christmas dinner table. Roasted, jerked, stewed, fried or baked, this Christmas dinner classic is guaranteed to make its way to all plates when you gather this holiday.

Curried Mutton/ Curried Goat: For most Jamaicans, a Christmas meal isn’t complete without curried mutton or curried goat. The meal is simply a must have for all occasions. So be sure to add this spicy, colourful and tasty dish to your holiday menu this year.

Fish: Christmas is for everyone and so incorporating fish into your Christmas dinner helps not only to offer variety but to provide a viable option for non-meat eaters. Whether grilled, steamed, or fried, fish is a versatile dish that can easily be seasoned to bring out its natural flavours.

Rice and Gungo Peas: No Jamaican Christmas dinner is complete without rice and gungo peas. This classic is a staple complimentary dish for your main meats and salads and promises to make your meal more filling.

Sorrel: Forget your sodas, juices and box drinks — Christmas season is sorrel season. Made from the sorrel flower and often spiked heavily with rum, this refreshing drink is a festive delight that will perfectly balance your meals.

Jamaican Fruitcake: Christmas wouldn’t be the same without the beloved fruitcake. Made with a blend of raisins, prunes, cherries, cranberries, and mixed peels, soaked to perfection in your favourite rum and Red Label Wine. This moist and flavourful dessert is the ‘icing on the cake’ of any Christmas Day dinner.

Vegetable Salad: While the main courses may be the favourites, a fresh salad is also a necessity on your dinner table. A simple mix of greens, tomatoes, cucumbers and carrots can really complement your other meal items. It’s healthy, delicious and adds colour to your dinner table.

Potato Salad: Creamy and delicious, potato salad is another staple that finds its way onto Jamaican Christmas tables. With a combination of cooked potatoes, veggies, egg and a mayonnaise dressing, this side dish pairs well with the richer flavours of your main meats.

Baked Mac and Cheese: A warm, cheesy, baked mac and cheese can really make a difference on your Christmas menu. Its rich texture and delicious flavours makes it a favourite among guests of all ages. And, it pairs seamlessly with meats and salads alike.
