Detoxing naturally after holiday indulgence

DETOXING after holiday indulgence is encouraged by some experts as they see it as essential for restoring balance to your body and helping it recover from the effects of heavy, rich foods, alcohol, and sugary treats.

“Overeating and consuming processed or high-sodium foods can strain your digestive system and liver, leading to bloating, sluggishness, and fatigue,” said nutritionist Keisha Black.

“A natural detox helps your body eliminate toxins, regulate blood sugar levels, and reduce inflammation, making it easier to feel lighter, more energised, and focused. It also supports hydration, which is crucial for flushing out excess sodium and promoting healthy digestion.”

She said in addition to physical benefits, detoxing can help reset your mindset and establish healthy habits for the new year. By incorporating nutrient-dense, whole foods and avoiding processed or sugary items, you give your body the nourishment it craves while breaking any dependency on unhealthy eating patterns.

“This process can improve your energy levels, boost mental clarity, and leave you feeling more in control of your health. Starting the year with a detox sets the tone for sustainable wellness goals and provides a fresh start for both body and mind,” Black added.

She said this detoxing doesn’t require extreme measures. Instead, you should focus on gentle, sustainable habits to help your body reset and feel its best.

Here’s how to do it:

Hydrate generously

Why? Water supports digestion, flushes toxins, and rehydrates the body.

How?

• Drink at least 8-10 cups of water daily.

• Start the day with warm lemon water to kick-start digestion.

• Add herbs like mint or slices of cucumber for flavour.

Focus on whole foods

Why? Whole foods are nutrient-dense and help your liver and gut naturally detoxify.

How?

• Eat plenty of leafy greens lie spinach and kale.

• Incorporate cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts.

• Include fibre-rich foods like oats, chia seeds, lentils, and fresh fruits.

Avoid processed foods

Why? Reducing processed foods, added sugars, and alcohol gives your digestive system a break.

How?

• Cook meals at home using fresh ingredients.

• Limit sugary snacks, fried foods, and pre-packaged meals.

Move your body

Why? Exercise stimulates circulation and helps eliminate toxins through sweat.

How?

• Aim for 30 minutes of movement daily (walking, yoga, or light cardio).

• Try gentle twists and stretches in yoga to aid digestion.

Support your gut

Why? A healthy gut aids in digestion and waste elimination.

How?

• Add probiotics through fermented foods like yoghurt, kimchi, or kefir.

• Eat prebiotic foods like garlic, onions, and bananas.

Sip on herbal teas

Why? Certain teas support detoxification and hydration.

How?

• Drink dandelion, ginger, or peppermint tea to support digestion.

• Green tea provides antioxidants and boosts metabolism.

Prioritise sleep

Why? Sleep is essential for recovery and natural detoxification.

How?

• Aim for seven to nine hours of sleep.

• Avoid caffeine and screen time one to two hours before bed.

Add natural detoxifiers

• Liver-friendly foods: Garlic, beets, turmeric, and grapefruit.

• Detoxifying spices: Ginger, cinnamon, cayenne pepper.

• Hydrating fruits: Watermelon, oranges, and berries.
