Nine pedestrians among 18 killed in traffic crashes – ITA
The Island Traffic Authority (ITA) is reporting that nine of the 18 people who have been killed in motor vehicle crashes this year are pedestrians.
Three were motorcyclists and two were pillion passengers. Also killed as of Friday, January 17 were: one pedalcyclist, the driver of a private motor car, one commercial vehicle driver and one driver of a public passenger vehicle.
According to the ITA, both fatalities and fatal crashes have increased by 13 per cent this year when compared to the corresponding period last year. So far, motorcyclists account for 17 per cent of the fatalities since the start of the year, pedestrians account for 50 per cent and pillion passengers 11 per cent.
Vulnerable road users (pedestrians, pedalcyclists, motorcyclists and pillion passengers) combined account for 83 per cent of the road users killed since the start of the year. Overall, passengers account for 11 per cent of the road users killed since January 1, with males accounting for 78 per cent and females 22 per cent respectively.
