Sunshine Girls dominate South Africa 59-47 to take 2-0 lead
KINGSTON, Jamaica— The Jamaica Sunshine Girls delivered another impressive display, defeating South Africa 59-47 in the second test of their three-match series at the National Indoor Sports Centre in Kingston on Wednesday.
Having won the first game 55-47, the Sunshine Girls now have a firm grasp on the Margaret Beckford trophy with one game remaining.
The series concludes on Saturday at the same venue.
Shimona Jok led the way with 35 goals from 37 attempts for the Sunshine Girls. She got support from Shanice Beckford with 14 goals from 17 attempts, Rhae Dixon with a perfect six from six, and Mischa Creary with four goals from five attempts.
For South Africa, Kamegelo Maseko scored 19 from 20, Rolene Streutter netted 12 from 14, and Elmere Van Der Berg got 16 from 16.
The Sunshine Girls made a strong statement in the opening quarter, racing out to an 18-13 lead. Their five-point advantage gave them a solid foundation to build upon.
The second quarter got off to a strong start for both teams, but as the period progressed, the Sunshine Girls began to pull away from South Africa, ultimately taking a 34-26 lead into halftime.
The third quarter was just as explosive as the first two, filled with thrilling moments. By the end of the period, the Sunshine Girls had stretched their lead to 50-36.
The Jamaicans maintained their grip on the game, dominating the final quarter to secure a 59-47 victory.
