Whittingham’s double century highlights Headley Cup first round

A double century from Dinthill Technical High’s Orjay Whittingham and disappointingly low scores for a few schools in lopsided losses, were among prominent features of last week’s first round of the 2025 rural Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association/Grace Headley Cup cricket competition.

At York Castle High, Whittingham stroked 203 not out, the first double century of the Headley Cup season, and all-rounder Jemone Jones followed up a half century with a six-wicket haul as Dinthill beat the hosts by 299 runs.

Dinthill High made 344-3, with Tajaun Brown and Jemone Jones, who both made 51, supporting Whittingham. York Castle High replied with 45 all out as Jones took six for 11 and Royshawn Goodhall claimed 4-14.

At Cornwall College, visitors St James High were bowled out for 11 as the hosts, driven by a six-wicket haul from Joeldeen Williams, and centuries from Henzell Evans and Damien Daley, won by 372 runs.

Cornwall College racked up 383-1, powered by Evans (154 not out) and Daley (132). Williams, who took six for two runs, and Vinroy Lynch (three for eight) combined to tumble over St James.

At Black River High, Eejay Spence led the way with an unbeaten century as Black River defeated Green Pond High by 180 runs.

Black River High made 198-4 declared with Spence scoring 100 not out and Jemar Morgan adding 33. Green Pond High were bowled out for 18 with Morgan taking three wickets for two runs and Quion Spence two for three.

In Santa Cruz, the hosts St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) dismissed visitors Cambridge High for 24 to win by 10 wickets.

STETHS fast bowlers Adrian Silvera (three wickets for six runs) and Jahliel Smith (three for 12) led the way in the demolition of the Cambridge High innings. STETHS then reached 25 without loss to complete the win.

At Old Harbour High, the hosts beat Ocho Rios High by 165 runs as Tavar Powell turned in an outstanding all-round performance.

Old Harbour High made 223 for nine wickets with Powell as the topscorer with 92, while Jaban Ralph made 35. Oneil Lampart took four for 57. Ocho Rios High made 58 with Powell capturing five wickets for 11 runs.

At Content Gardens, Brown’s Town High were dismissed for just nine runs as Tacky High romped to a 10-wicket victory, reaching 12 without loss. Tacky High seam bowlers Tedain Noyan (four wickets for two runs), and left-armer Reakvon Renford (four wickets for one run) were the chief destroyers.

At Vere Technical High, Perico Henry took a hat-trick to lead the hosts to a 218-run win over Alphansus Davis High.

Vere Technical High made 261 for eight as Rohjay Mitchell (58) Donche Peters (35) and Henry (30) led the batting against Quwain Yates and Oshane Stanford who claimed three wickets each. Alphansus Davis High made 43 all out with Henry taking 5 for 15 and Royton Bailey four for five.

At Cross Keys High, Daniel McClymont shone with bat and ball as May Day High defeated their hosts by 32 runs. May Day High first made 126 with McClymont stroking 61 against Cross Keys left-arm spinner Shandayne Mitchell who took five for 36.

Cross Keys High replied with 93 all out, McClymont taking five wickets for 43 with his off breaks.

At Sir P Oval, Dijauni West hit an unbeaten century and leg spinner Danjay Larmond took five wickets for 16 as Clarendon College beat Claude Mckay High by 102 runs.

Clarendon College raced to 200 for one wicket declared with West, a right-hand opener, stroking 100 not out and Shakiel Walters 41 not out.

In reply, Claude McKay were dismissed for 98, falling to Larmond and off spinners Roni Mitchell (2 for 8) and Terome Gayle (2 for 30).

At Holmwood Technical High, Richard Myles and Kevaughn Flemming slammed centuries and the latter followed up with six wickets as Holmwood brushed aside Munro College by 210 runs.

Holmwood first piled up 368 for five wickets with Myles hammering 158 and Flemming 100 not out.

Munro College replied with 158 all out as Jaden Newell led the way with 71 against Flemming (six for 38).
