Demario Prince now ninth fastest Jamaican in 60m hurdles
Demario Prince lowered his personal best and Baylor University record when he ran 7.57 seconds to win the men’s 60m hurdles final at the Charlie Thomas Invitational held at Texas A&M University, in College Station on Saturday.
The former St Jago High ISSA/GraceKennedy Boys’ Athletics champion lowered the 7.62 seconds he had run at a meet held at Kansas State University a week earlier and moved up to ninth best ever on the Jamaican all-time list.
Prince broke the meet record 7.68 seconds set last year by Daniel Harrold of Texas State University and the Facility Record 7.59 seconds set on January 25 by Michael Dickson and moved up to fifth on the NCAA Division One rankings.
Shevon Depass, a freshman at Western Texas College, was fourth in a personal best 8.06 seconds.
There were also wins for Demar Francis, also of Baylor, Kimar Farquharson of Texas A&M, and Shadae Findley of the University of Texas San Antonio (UTSA) at the same meet.
Francis won the men’s 200m, running 20.96 seconds while Farquharson won the men’s 800m in 1:49.00 minutes, with Giovouni Henry of Texas Christian University in sixth place in 1:50.11 seconds.
Findley ran a personal best (PB) and UTSA record 53.29 seconds in the women’s 400m, her second PB this season after she had run 54.10 seconds in late January.
Tafada Wright of Mississippi State was sixth in the women’s weight throw with a mark of 18.32m.
Aaliyah Foster of the University of Texas and Travis Williams of the University of Southern California (USC) took runners-up positions in their respective events at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
Foster was second in the women’s long jump with 6.42m, while Williams ran 6.55 seconds in the men’s 60m final.
Carleta Bernard, also of Texas, had two personal best runs, clocking 7.28 seconds in the women’s 60m before finishing fifth in the final with 7.31 seconds. She then ran 23.23 seconds for ninth in the women’s 200m invitational.
Gregory Prince of Louisiana State University was eighth in the men’s 200m in 21.15 seconds; Brandon Lloyd of Arizona State placed eighth in the men’s shot put with 18.28m; Shaiquan Dunn of University of South Carolina was 11th with 17.33m, while Danielle Sloley of Arizona State threw 15.30m in the women’s shot put.
At the Penn Classic in Philadelphia, Big East champion and NCAA indoor finalist Roschell Clayton of the University of Villanova won the women’s high jump with a mark of 1.76m.
Rochele Solmon of Hampton University was third in the women’s shot put with 14.59m and her teammate Damali Williams was 11th with 12.39m.
Annishka McDonald broke into the top five all time at the University of West Virginia when she cleared a personal best 1.74m to win the women’s high jump at the Sykes and Sabock Invitational at Penn State University.
KeSean-Jordan Rhooms of Morgan State had a personal best 6.10m in the men’s long jump while at the Steve Miller Invitational at Kansas State, Richelle Stanley of the University of Kansas jumped a college best 11.99m in the women’s triple jump.
