‘THE RIGHT DECISION’
MBU chairman speaks on Head Coach Zapata’s exit
MONTEGO Bay United (MBU) Chairman Yoni Epstein has expressed his sadness over the sudden departure of Head Coach Rodolfo Zapata, a decision that has left many fans in western Jamaica stunned. Zapata led the team to a record of 13 wins, six draws, and four losses in their 23 matches so far this season.
With MBU sitting third in the standings on 45 points, trailing league leaders Mount Pleasant (55 points) and Arnett Gardens (48 points), Zapata’s exit comes at a critical stage of the season for the club. However, Epstein has made it clear that the club must move forward.
“It is a decision that both the coach and the club feel is the right one at this time,” he said. “It is unfortunate because we believe he has done a really good job with the team so far. But, sometimes there comes a moment where changes must be made — whether in-season or off-season — and this is one of those moments where Montego Bay has to pivot due to a mutual decision.”
While acknowledging the impact of Zapata’s departure, Epstein says MBU remain focused on their ultimate goal of winning the league and qualifying for the Concacaf Caribbean Cup.
“Decisions like these are never easy but we will have to regroup and implement plan B. Our assistant coach, Dillon Thelwell, will step in as interim and we will be making further announcements soon regarding who will take over the position permanently.”
Although fans may be shocked by the development, Epstein revealed that the club was not caught off guard as discussions about Zapata’s future had been ongoing.
“No, it didn’t catch us by surprise because we are a very involved group,” he said. “We meet with our technical staff weekly so we saw the possibility of this happening. We have a great relationship with him and the rest of the technical staff so we understand what is good, what needs improvement, and what is indifferent within our club.”
Epstein expressed gratitude for Zapata’s contributions, highlighting the progress made under his leadership.
“He has done well for us,” Epstein said. “We are sitting third in the table, and while there’s still work to do, he has certainly made a positive impact. I have thanked him repeatedly for the job he has done.”
The players were informed on Friday night.
“The players were only made aware last night when we informed them, and while they were a bit shaken, professional footballers understand that these things happen,” Epstein said. “At the end of the day they play for the badge, regardless of who the coach is.”
Despite the uncertainty, Epstein firmly believes MBU can still win the league and achieve its objectives.
“Of course Montego Bay can win the league! Our goal is to finish in the top two and secure that bye into the final. We fully intend to compete for the championship and earn a spot in the Caribbean Cup.”
Thelwell’s first game as interim head coach is on Monday evening when MBU host Tivoli Gardens at Montego Bay Sports Complex at 7:45 pm.
