Southwest Airlines to end free checked luggage policy
Southwest Airlines, known for its policy of allowing free checked bags since its inception over 50 years ago, will begin charging for some checked luggage effective May 28, 2025.
The Dallas-based airline did not disclose the fees to be anticipated, but in a statement said the new initiatives will reward the airline’s most loyal customers and give all customers more options for a broader range of travel experiences.
The new policy does not apply to Rapid Rewards A-List preferred members and customers flying on business select fares who are still eligible for two free checked bags. A-List members and other select customers are also eligible for one free checked bag. Likewise, the airline will credit one checked bag for Rapid Rewards credit card members.
“We have tremendous opportunity to meet current and future customer needs, attract new customer segments we don’t compete for today, and return to the levels of profitability that both we and our shareholders expect,” said Bob Jordan, president, chief executive officer and vice chairman of the board of directors at Southwest Airlines.
He continued, “We will do all this while remaining focused on what’s made us strong—our people and the authentic, friendly, and award-winning customer service only they can provide.”
