Jamaica win three of four sprint relays at Carifta to end second day on high
Jamaica ended the second and penultimate day of the 52nd Carifta Track and Field Championships on a high after winning three of the four 4x100m relays gold medals as they continued to dominate the regional competition.
The Jamaicans won both of the girls relays, the Under-17 team winning in a championships record 44.86 seconds, while the under-20 boys avenged a bitter loss to Trinidad and Tobago last year. The Under-17 boys team were unable to recover from a faulty first handover and finished their final in fifth.
The Jamaicans continue to lead the medal table, an unofficial tally after the relay seeing them well ahead on 43 medals- 17 gold, 12 silver and 14 bronze; followed by the Bahamas on 22 medals- 10 gold, 10 silver and two bronze; Trinidad and Tobago with 16 medals- five gold, five silver and six bronze; and Cayman with two gold and a bronze. Grenada, Guyana, Antigua, St Lucia, Dominica and the US Virgin Islands have one gold each.
The Under-17 girls relay team of Shayon Smith, Adora Campbell, Malayia Duncan and Rihanna Scott broke the record of 44.95 seconds set in 2018 by a Jamaican team of Briana Williams, Sashieka Steel, Serena Cole and Tia Clayton.
The Under-20 girls were led off by Sabrina Dockery, who handed the baton to Tiana Marshall; Abigail Wolfe was on the third leg while 100m champion Shanoya Douglas anchored the quartet to a 43.65 seconds clocking.
The Under-20 boys team of 100m champion Jamal Stephenson, Shaquane Gordon, Antonio Powell and Tyreece Freeman on anchor clocked 39.56 seconds.
Meanwhile, Chevaz Penn retained his Under-20 boys high jump crown, clearing 2.14m, well clear of Joshua Williams of the Bahamas- 2.00m and Aaron McKenzie, also of Jamaica, who took the bronze with 1.95m.
Tarique Daley won the silver medal in the Under-20 javelin with a best mark of 61.55m while Rohanna Sudlow took third in the Under-20 girls long jump with 6.15m (0.0m/s).
