Mahogany dominates Easter Sprint Cup feature

Despite getting up in age at eight, the well-decorated Mahogany continued to show that he still has plenty left in his tank with an emphatic win in the $1.25-million Easter Sprint Cup feature at Caymanas Park on Monday, April 21, 2025, dominating the competition with his speed and class. The veteran runner’s convincing victory underscored his enduring talent and cemented his reputation as a top-tier sprinter.

Trained by Ian Parsrad and ridden by apprentice jockey Tajay Suckoo, Mahogany secured a 1¾-length victory in the Overnight Allowance contest for three-year-olds and upward over 5½ furlongs (1,100m). Mahogany’s final time of 1:06.1 (23.3 x 47.2 x 59.3) was a testament to his experience and skill, as he effortlessly outpaced Unbelievable Force, ridden by Raddesh Roman, and Fearless Soul, ridden by Eric Haughton.

The win adds to Mahogany’s impressive resume, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure and against strong competition. Mahogany has now won 19 races, finishing second eight times, and finishing third five times from 37 starts with lifetime earnings of over $20.3 million in Stakes.

Mahogany broke off well at the start of the race, battling for the lead with She’s That Girl, ridden by Jordan Barrett, and
Unbelievable Force. As the field approached the half-mile turn, Mahogany assumed a slim lead over Unbelievable Force, while She’s That Girl began to fade.

Unbelievable Force drew alongside Mahogany approaching the distance, and the two horses turned for home locked in a fierce battle. However, Tajay Suckoo expertly guided Mahogany, keeping him well-balanced on the inside. In the final furlong (200m), Mahogany found another gear, drawing off convincingly to cross the wire easily. Despite being outrun by Mahogany, Unbelievable Force still managed a solid finish, securing the exacta spot.

Meanwhile, the $780,000 Aston Commock Memorial Trophy was a showcase for Hotbred Scammer, a talented four-year-old American-bred dark bay/brown colt. Trained by Patrick Fong and ridden by Richie Shakes, Hotbred Scammer delivered an impressive performance to win the Restricted Allowance IV event by a length and three quarters.

The contest, open to native-bred four-year-olds and upward (non-winners of three) and imported four-year-olds and upward (non-winners of two), was held over one mile (1,600m). Hotbred Scammer surged to the front of the pack approaching the half-mile (800m) marker and never looked back, demonstrating his speed and endurance.

In the end, Hotbred Scammer crossed the finish line easily ahead of Shooting Star, ridden by Robert Halledeen, and
The General, ridden by Emelio McLean. The winning time was 1:41.1 (24.2 x 48.0 x 1:14.4 x 1:27.3).

Hotbred Scammer was one of two winners for Shakes on the 10-race card. He later won aboard the Lorne Kirlew-conditioned Riley J in the night pan for his double.

Also with a double was jockey Phillip Parchment. Parchment won the third race aboard Dark Matter for trainer Donovan Plumer and the eighth race aboard KP Choice for trainer Phillip Elliott.

Racing continues on the weekend with races on Saturday and Sunday.
