Williams, Myles receive athletes’ recognition
Cedricka Williams of Barton Community College and Salieci Myles of William Carey College University were on Tuesday named national athletes of the week in the National Junior College Athletics Association (NJCAA) and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics Association (NAIA) after record-breaking weekends.
Williams was named the NCJAA women’s field event athlete for back-to-back weeks after she broke her own discus throw record for a third time this season. She threw 59.89m during the Rock Chalk Classic at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas.
The former Holmwood Technical thrower broke the 59.46m she had set a week earlier at the Michael Johnson Invitational hosted by Baylor University.
It was the sixth time that Williams either tied or broke the record and the fifth time she was being name national athlete of the week.
Myles, who is formerly of Edwin Allen High and Rusea’s High and now attends William Carey, was named the NAIA Women’s performer of the week. She won a third-straight 100m hurdle title after the highly-anticipated clash with compatriot Briana Campbell of Life University (Ga) in the final at the Southern States Conference Championships.
Myles ran 13.22 seconds to not just retain her title but also the Conference record. Campbell repeated the 13.23 she had run two weeks earlier to break Myles’ record 13.28 set in 2023.
Myles, who contributed 20.5 points to William Carey’s winning point total of 232, was second in the 400 hurdles in 1:03.45. She was also part of the Crusaders’ winning 4×100 team that clocked an NAIA-leading time of 44.99.
