WRONG PRYCE
KSAMC promises speedy correction of misspelling on road sign
NOT even the wrong spelling of her last name could dampen the enthusiasm of track icon Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and the many people who turned out to celebrate with her as the street she grew up on, Ashoka Road, in Waterhouse, St Andrew, was renamed in her honour on Sunday.
The gaffe was quickly spotted as the sign was unveiled with “Fraser-Price”, instead of “Fraser-Pryce”, but the sprint queen and her family took it in stride.
An obviously embarrassed CEO of Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) Robert Hill accepted that the blame should be placed at the feet of the corporation that he leads and promised “the correct sign will be placed there in less than 12 hours time”.
Hill noted that Fraser-Pryce indicated that the spelling mistake could not take away from the occasion, but “these things sometimes do happen and I apologise sincerely and wholeheartedly for any inconvenience…”
Meanwhile, Mayor of Kingston Andrew Swaby added his apology as he indicated that the sign was erected hours before the unveiling ceremony and KSAMC officials were distracted as they had an Africa Day church service in the morning.
“So that was a slip. I wholeheartedly apologise to Shelly-Ann, her sponsors, her family, and her community for that. Words can’t explain,” said Swaby.
