KSAMC intensifies drive to remove derelict vehicles off sidewalks, warns car dealers, operators of legal action
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Car dealers and other operators who are misusing sidewalks in the Corporate Area are being warned to cease and desist or face the possibility of legal action.
The was issued by City Inspector at the Kingston and St Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) Alrick Francis, while on Bloomsbury Road on Friday overseeing the removal of several derelict vehicles and large trucks that had been blocking roadways and sidewalks in the area.
“I am pleased to announce that those encroachments are no more,” he said adding, “I’m sending a warning to the operators. Do not return. Because if you return, not only will we be removing, we will be taking legal action,” he said.
Francis directed his comments to the flatbed and cesspool truck operators who had left their vehicles compromising the road, but cautioned car dealerships as well.
“We would have seen a number of car dealers, putting vehicles on the sidewalk for advertisement. I’m going to ask persons across the municipality to cease and desist. The roadway and the sidewalk is for pedestrians and for free passage,” he stressed.
He maintained that the “selfish operations” often reduced streets to one ways or totally cut them off.
One resident explained to Observer Online that residents often had to walk in the street because of the repeated parking violations.
Francis also mentioned damage to fire hydrants because of illegal mechanic operations being performed on the sidewalk.
The KSAMC says it removed 10 derelict vehicles, and five flatbed and cesspool trucks from the area as part of its ongoing clean-up Kingston initiative.
