Reggae Boyz newcomer Tyreece Campbell ready

KINGSTON, Jamaica — If his middle name is anything to go by, then Jamaican fans could be rocking to sweet music on the field delivered by new boy Tyreece Anthony Tupac Shakur Campbell.

Campbell, who was born in England, was named in honour of American rapper Tupac Shakur.

The twinkle feet, talented 21-year-old who plays as a forward for the English team Charlton Athletic has just been voted the Charlton Young Player of the Year Award for the 2024/2025 season.

This has not gone unnoticed by head coach Steve McClaren, and he has been called up to represent Jamaica as the island pushes for World Cup qualification, last achieved at the 1998 World Cup in France.

“Good feeling. Yeah, I’m happy. It’s one of my targets I start the season to achieve it,” said Campbell as the Reggae Boyz prepare to play the British Virgin Islands on Saturday night.

Campbell, who said he waited a long time to finally get his Jamaican passport, said he was also encouraged by his Jamaican teammates at Charlton Athletic, Kaheim Dixon and Karoy Anderson.

“All the time, they’re telling me I should come and get my passport. So, yeah, to finally get it, it’s good,” he reiterated.

Campbell had his first training session with the Reggae Boyz, and immediately he felt at home. “It was good. Everyone was nice and welcoming. Made me feel comfortable,” Campbell pointed out.

If Campbell is anything as good in football as Tupac was in music, Jamaica would have a real superstar on their hands, and fans could get a glimpse of his talent Saturday night against the British Virgin Islands.
