Diana King, Shaggy scored big on Billboard 30 years ago

Shake it to the Max (Fly) remix by Moliy, and featuring Jamaicans Silent Addy, Skillibeng and Shenseea continues to dominate Billboard and global music charts.

On this week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart dated June 21 the song moves up one place to #55. But did you know that exactly 30 years ago this week on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated June 24, 1995, two Jamaicans were climbing the chart simultaneously?

Diana King was at #16, having fallen from her peak at #13 with Shy Guy, a gold-selling single featured on the soundtrack to the film
Bad Boys which starred Will Smith as well as Diana’s Tougher Than Love album for The Work Group, a label distributed by Sony Music Entertainment.

Shaggy’s double-sided single Boombastic/In the Summertime moved from #38 to #26 in its sixth week on the chart. The single would later on peak at #3 on the Hot 100 chart and would become certified for sales exceeding 1.2 million units in the United States.

The #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that week, Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman by Bryan Adams, while Nicki French’s remake of Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart stalled at #2. Don’t Take it Personal, the debut single by Monica was at #3, while Boyz II Men’s Water Runs Dry occupied the #4 spot.

The rest of the top 10 included One More Chance/Stay With Me by the Notorious BIG at #5, Scream/Childhood by Michael and Janet Jackson (#6), This is How We Do It by Montell Jordan – (#7), Waterfalls by TLC (#8), I’ll Be There For You/You’re All I Need to Get By – Method Man and Mary J Blige (#9), and Freak Like Me by Adina Howard (#10).

Still on Shake it to the Max (Fly) remix, the song slips on Billboard Global 200 as it falls from #6 to #9, while on Global Excluding US it backtracks from #5 to #8.

On Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart it inches up from #14 to #13, while reversing from #11 to #16 on R&B/Hip Hop Streaming Songs. On Hot R&B/Hip Hop Airplay, it moves up to #18 in its sixth week, while on R&B/Hip Hop Digital Song Sales it tumbles from #4 to #14.

Over on Rhythmic Top 40 Airplay, it rises from #17 to #14 in its 8th week, and on Billboard’s Canadian Hot 100 it reaches a new peak at #25.

The song still remains strong on several European charts, while debuting at #6 in the United Arab Emirates and #10 on the joint Middle East/North African chart.

Dutty Classics Collection by Sean Paul which was recently certified platinum in the United Kingdom, re-enters the Billboard Reggae Albums chart at #2, while Shaggy’s 2000 release Hotshot is back on the chart at #3.
