Diana King, Shaggy scored big on Billboard 30 years ago
Shake it to the Max (Fly) remix by Moliy, and featuring Jamaicans Silent Addy, Skillibeng and Shenseea continues to dominate Billboard and global music charts.
On this week’s Billboard Hot 100 chart dated June 21 the song moves up one place to #55. But did you know that exactly 30 years ago this week on the Billboard Hot 100 chart dated June 24, 1995, two Jamaicans were climbing the chart simultaneously?
Diana King was at #16, having fallen from her peak at #13 with Shy Guy, a gold-selling single featured on the soundtrack to the film
Bad Boys which starred Will Smith as well as Diana’s Tougher Than Love album for The Work Group, a label distributed by Sony Music Entertainment.
Shaggy’s double-sided single Boombastic/In the Summertime moved from #38 to #26 in its sixth week on the chart. The single would later on peak at #3 on the Hot 100 chart and would become certified for sales exceeding 1.2 million units in the United States.
The #1 song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that week, Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman by Bryan Adams, while Nicki French’s remake of Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse of the Heart stalled at #2. Still on Shake it to the Max (Fly) remix, the song slips on Billboard Global 200 as it falls from #6 to #9, while on Global Excluding US it backtracks from #5 to #8.
On Billboard’s R&B/Hip Hop Songs chart it inches up from #14 to #13, while reversing from #11 to #16 on R&B/Hip Hop Streaming Songs. On Hot R&B/Hip Hop Airplay, it moves up to #18 in its sixth week, while on R&B/Hip Hop Digital Song Sales it tumbles from #4 to #14.
Over on Rhythmic Top 40 Airplay, it rises from #17 to #14 in its 8th week, and on Billboard’s Canadian Hot 100 it reaches a new peak at #25.
The song still remains strong on several European charts, while debuting at #6 in the United Arab Emirates and #10 on the joint Middle East/North African chart.
Dutty Classics Collection by Sean Paul which was recently certified platinum in the United Kingdom, re-enters the Billboard Reggae Albums chart at #2, while Shaggy’s 2000 release Hotshot is back on the chart at #3.
World on Fire by Stick Figure is #4, Greatest Hits by UB40 is #5, while Sean Paul’s Dutty Rock is #6.
Wisdom and Set in Stone by Stick Figure are #7 and #8, while Exodus by Bob Marley and the Wailers, and Damian Marley’s Welcome to Jamrock are #9 and #10.
Legend by Bob Marley and the Wailers continues to hold the #1 spot after 283 non-consecutive weeks.
Life is the Thing by Canadian reggae band The Human Rights is still #1 on the Rebel Vibez Top Ten Canadian Reggae chart, while Pressure by Gisto debuts at #10.
Christopher Martin’s Wife and Sweetheart takes over the #1 spot on the South Forida Reggae chart, with Missing You by Paul Elliott inching up from #3 to #2, Smile by Rod Spence stepping up from #17 to #15, and Glen Washington’s Better Than Before improving from #21 to #18.
Singer Kevoy Clarke ascends to the #1 spot on the New York Reggae chart with That’s The Way, while Fallen For You by Dinho Da Rastaman bolts from #10 to #7.
Praise the Lord by Richie Stephens is #9, I’d Love You to Want Me by Tony Roy hits #10, and True Lies by Naomi Cowan (#26),
