Jamaica set to shine at APCA draughts championships

The Jamaica Draughts Association (JDA) will be participating in the highly anticipated 2025 American Pool Checkers Association (APCA) Championship, taking place in Jacksonville, Florida, from July 7 to 10, 2025.

The team includes Grand Master International Wayne Alphonso Reid, also known as Shines, widely regarded as Jamaica’s best draughts player due to his dominance over several years.

Shines has been a force to be reckoned with in the Jamaican draughts community, winning the National Championships for JDA every year since its inception in 2016, straight to 2023.

Due to stiff competition in the 2024 JDA National Championships, Shines found himself in a three-way tie for the top position but is still widely regarded as Jamaica’s best draughts and pool checkers player.

His experience, knowledge and skills make him an invaluable member of the team.

Shines GMI title, the highest attainable international title, adds to his prestige and increases the demand for his participation in the APCA Championships.

Joining Shines in the tournament will be Top Master and newly elected President of JDA, Jermaine A Delattibudiere, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), and Top Master Mikoyan St Christopher Robinson, aka Sir Micks, Justice of the Peace and first vice president of the JDA.

Both players have shown exceptional skill and strategy in the game and are looking to make their mark in the tournament.

DSP Delattibudiere, who has already made a name for himself in the 2023 and 2024 APCA Championships by winning Top Master trophies for Jamaica, is looking to better his previous performances.

The JDA says it appreciates the support of APCA President Albert Harrison for Jamaica’s participation in the APCA Championships. Additionally, the association’s vice president, Kenneth Jones, sponsored Shines’ plane ticket, ensuring his participation.

Under its new leadership, the JDA has adopted the slogan ‘Promoting Strategic and Critical Thinking’. This reflects the organization’s commitment to developing these essential skills through the game of draughts/checkers.

Draughts require players to think critically and strategically, anticipating their opponent’s moves and adjusting their strategy accordingly. These skills are transferable to real-life situations, enabling individuals to analyze problems, evaluate options and make informed decisions.

The JDA National Championship, scheduled for December, is anticipated to be the largest ever, with great competition expected. The new administration is driving hope and development in checkers/draughts, and the event promises to be an exciting showcase of talent.

JDA’s public relations officer, Lennox ‘Big Bear’ Lewis, will make himself available to assist with updating the media on the happenings in the championships. The JDA is seeking support from the public and private sectors for the delegation through sponsorships and outreach.

They believe that with Shines’ past success and the team’s collective talent, Jamaica is poised to make a strong impression at the APCA Championships.
