Gramps Morgan’s son hoping to make nat’l basketball team
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Jelanie Morgan, son of reggae star Gramps Morgan, says he is on a mission to represent Jamaica on the global basketball stage, not just as a player, but as an ambassador for culture, pride, and untold stories.
The 6-foot-4 shooting guard says he wants to inspire the next wave of Jamaican athletes to dream bigger, train harder, and believe that they can make their mark internationally, just like his musical family has done.
Morgan is a junior attending Lesley University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He worked out for two days at the National Stadium with the national team on July 5th and 6th. His training involved player evaluations, shooting drills, and scrimmaging.
“Being able to try out for the national team for a chance to represent my country is a dream come true for me. I have been working on it for a while now, and to see it come together is surreal,” Morgan said.
Beyond basketball, Morgan said he is passionate about giving back to his community. Whether it’s mentoring younger players or speaking on the importance of discipline, education, and cultural pride, he sees part of his purpose to uplift others.
The basketballer believes that sports can be a powerful tool for connection, growth, and change, not just in Jamaica, but around the world.
