MIAMI, United States (CMC) — A weakening Hurricane Erin is moving closer towards Bermuda as weather officials are keeping an eye on the two weather patterns that could  affect the region over the next seven days.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said that Erin is an estimated 555 miles west south west of Bermuda with maximum sustained winds of 100 miles per hour (mph).

A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Bermuda and the NHC said Erin is moving towards the north-northwest near 13 mph.

“A turn toward the north and north-northeast is expected today (Wednesday) and tonight, followed by a faster motion toward the northeast and east-northeast by Thursday and Friday. On the forecast track, the center of Erin will move over the western Atlantic between the United States east coast and Bermuda today through early Friday, and then pass south of Atlantic Canada Friday and Saturday,” the NHC said.

It said some strengthening of Hurricane Erin is possible during the next day or so, but that weakening is likely to begin by Friday but Erin is forecast to remain a hurricane into the weekend.

“Erin is a large hurricane and growing.  Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 265 miles,” the NHC said.

Swells generated by Erin will affect The Bahamas, Bermuda, the east coast of the United States, and Atlantic Canada during the next several days.

“These rough ocean conditions are expected to cause life-threatening surf and rip currents,” the NHC said.

Meanwhile, two weather disturbances are being monitored as they near the Leeward Islands.

The NHC said the tropical waves located over the central tropical Atlantic continues to produce a broad area of disorganised showers and thunderstorms.

“Environmental conditions appear conducive for gradual development…and a tropical depression could form late this week or over the weekend while moving near or the north of the northern Leeward Islands.”
