STETHS and Glenmuir kick off daCosta Cup season

SANTA CRUZ, St Elizabeth — Ben Francis KO champions St Elizabeth Technical High (STETHS) and ISSA Champions Cup holders Glenmuir High are among 12 schools that will be making their first appearances of the ISSA daCosta Cup season Wednesday when the competition continues with 31 games across 12 zones.

After missing Saturday’s kick-off, the teams will now get their campaigns underway and will be hoping for wins.

STETHS, who were runners-up in Zone E last season, will host Newell High, who held the former winners to a 1-1 draw in their first round game last year but capitulated 6-0 at STETHS.

Glenmuir High won their first ISSA Champions Cup but fell at the semi-final level in the daCosta Cup competition, where they had appeared to be on course for a win.

On Wednesday, they will play Bustamante High, who are returning to the competition for the first time since the 2017 season when they lost all first-round games.

Glenmuir High won their first eight games last season and were among the first qualifiers for the second round and are expected to be among the favourites this season.

The Lenworth Hyde era at Dinthill Technical will begin when they take on rivals Charlemont High in a Zone J game on Wednesday, and much will be expected from one of the most decorated schoolboys coaches in Jamaica.

Dinthill Technical have been agonisingly close to winning titles over the last few seasons, only to come up short at crucial moments and the experienced Hyde is expected to get them over the hump.

Meanwhile, there will also be six games featuring teams that won their opening games on Saturday, going up against each other.

Maldon High and Irwin High will clash in Zone A at Maldon; BB Coke who upset Munro College on Saturday will take on Maggotty High in Zone E; Bellefield High who beat Alston High 7-0 will be away to Alphansus Davis High in Zone G; Ocho Rios will face York Castle in a Zone K game at Drax Hall; and St Mary High and Port Antonio High meets in Zone M at Highgate Community Centre.
