KINGSTON, Jamaica—The Urban Development Corporation (UDC) has moved to remind members of the public that access to Little Dunn’s River is free of charge following reports that individuals are unlawfully charging members of the public to enter the property.

“The UDC is also aware of reports that individuals are unlawfully charging members of the public to enter the property. We strongly condemn this practice and reaffirm that access to Little Dunn’s River is free of charge. Any attempt by unauthorised persons to collect money, obstruct entry, or operate businesses on the property without permission is illegal. The corporation is working closely with law enforcement and other government agencies to address these breaches and ensure the safety and integrity of the site,” UDC said in a statement on Thursday.

Acknowledging that Little Dunn’s River holds significant historical, cultural, and recreational value both to the country and to the local community, the corporation said it remains committed to engaging with the relevant authorities and stakeholders to develop a sustainable management framework for the site.

“Our goal is to provide safe, well-managed, and environmentally responsible access to Little Dunn’s River. This must include the implementation of proper safety infrastructure, and systems to prevent illegal activity in order to ensure the space can be freely enjoyed by all Jamaicans,” UDC said.

The corporation further clarified that access to the shoreline area at Little Dunn’s River has not been removed.

“The corporation, several years ago, installed steps to facilitate safe access to the coastline, and that access remains in place. To further promote safety and secure the property, the UDC is presently carrying out repairs to sections of the perimeter fencing that have been eroded or removed,” UDC said.

It continued that: “Access is currently permitted on weekends during the ongoing perimeter fence repairs. Visitors are reminded that they enter and use the area at their own risk, and are urged to exercise caution due to the absence of lifeguards and safety infrastructure.”
