10 ways to volunteer this Christmas to support Jamaicans impacted by Melissa

As communities across Jamaica continue to pick up the pieces following Hurricane Melissa, the need to give back has never been greater, and what better time to do it than Christmas – a season that celebrates family, community and the spirit of giving to one another in meaningful ways.

If you’re looking to make a real difference this holiday season, here are some key places and programmes where you can volunteer:

1. Local church, community group or circle of friends: Sometimes the most impactful help happens with those closest to home. Many churches and neighbourhood groups are organising food drives, home-cleaning efforts, repairs, and emotional support initiatives for families affected by Hurricane Melissa. Gather your friends, co-workers or family and lend a hand.

2. Workplace: Numerous companies in Jamaica operate corporate volunteer programmes, especially during the Christmas season. Ask your human resource team about coordinated outreach activities such as rebuilding efforts, donation drives or community events for children and seniors.

3. Support Jamaica: The Government of Jamaica is mobilising volunteers to support communities affected by Hurricane Melissa. Through their official platform, they are connecting volunteers with structured, vetted opportunities for national service. Whether you want to assist in disaster response, social services or community development, this portal is a reliable place to start. You can sign up at https://supportjamaica.gov.jm/volunteers.

4. Food For the Poor Jamaica: Food for the Poor continues to assist families with housing, food distribution and post-hurricane relief. Volunteers help by supporting packing, distribution and community projects. You can sign up at https://www.foodforthepoorja.org/.

5. World Central Kitchen: World Central Kitchen has been on the ground in Jamaica providing hot meals to those affected by Hurricane Melissa. To assist with cooking, sandwich making, meal delivery by foot, car, etc, or loading and unloading kitchen supplies, sign up via https://wck.org/volunteer/.

6. American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ): AFJ partners with local organisations to support education, healthcare and disaster relief efforts. They welcome volunteers eager to contribute to rebuilding and community outreach projects. To get involved, complete the form via https://theafj.org/our-team/volunteers/.

7. Jamaica Red Cross: A vital force during emergencies, Jamaica Red Cross offers opportunities in disaster response, shelter support, first aid, and community preparedness training. To volunteer with this team, complete the volunteer form via https://www.jamaicaredcross.org/become-a-volunteer/.

8. The Salvation Army: The Salvation Army is actively providing emergency food, clean water and shelter to families displaced by Hurricane Melissa. If you are hoping to volunteer your time and talents to serve your community this Christmas, then the Salvation Army may present a great opportunity.

9. Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM)— Through the National Disaster Risk Management Volunteer Programme, volunteers can assist with disaster preparedness education, community assessments and relief coordination. To get involved, sign up at https://www.odpem.org.jm/ndrm-volunteer-programme/.

10. Adopt a family yourself: If you prefer something more personal, consider adopting a family affected by Hurricane Melissa. You can provide groceries, school supplies, home-repair support, or simply bring a little joy during the holidays. Even one family helped can make a difference. Dr Dayton Campbell, the Member of Parliament for Westmoreland Eastern, among the hardest hit sections of Jamaica, has launched his own ‘adopt-a-family’ initiative aimed at providing a direct link between potential donors and constituents worst affected by Melissa.

Giving is one of the greatest expressions of love. As we rebuild after Hurricane Melissa, your time, talent and compassion can uplift families who need it most. Whether you volunteer through a major organisation or simply help a neighbour, every act of service strengthens the spirit of Jamaica.
