Grand Market set for Water Square; Falmouth mayor urges orderly staging
TRELAWNY, Jamaica — Despite the lingering challenges caused by Hurricane Melissa, Mayor of Falmouth Councillor C Junior Gager has announced that the annual Grand Market will be staged in the historic Water Square from December 24 to 28.
However, speaking during Thursday’s monthly meeting of the Trelawny Municipal Corporation (TMC), Gager appealed to vendors and patrons to help ensure an orderly, well-managed staging.
“This is not a free-for-all. We want everybody to get in touch with the revenue services, see how your tents can be placed so that although the hurricane has shaken us, we don’t want anybody to feel that we have forgotten them,” he declared.
The mayor explained that the Revenue Services Department will guide vendors on the appropriate placement of stalls and tents to keep public spaces clear and avoid blocking roadways in the town centre.
Gager added that plans are also underway for the event to feature entertainment, pending approval from the police.
“We’re planning to have music. We will apply to the superintendent (of police) and we will see if that can be granted,” he said.
“We want to look merry and feel merry, and help our people relieve some of the stress from this period and, for a moment, forget the damages that were done,” he added.
Gager, who is also chairman of the TMC, noted that with cruise ships expected in the area during the Grand Market period, the festivities in Water Square could also become a cultural attraction for visiting passengers.
“If there is a ship in that period, the visitors can come out and see the enjoyment,” he said.
The mayor also used the meeting to extend Christmas greetings to stakeholders while acknowledging the difficulties faced by many residents still recovering from the storm.
“Christmas is coming, and I want to wish all of you a merry Christmas. Although it has been difficult for some persons who received damages and are still feeling the pain of Melissa, we want you to have a very merry, happy Christmas with your family,” he said.
He revealed that the municipal corporation will not be able to host its annual staff party this year due to financial constraints. However, the traditional Christmas treats for children and senior citizens will proceed as planned.
“We will be going ahead with our treat so that the kids and older folks will be able to share a good meal,” he assured.
