Cavalier U-14s to depart for football tournament in Cayman

Cavalier Under-14s are set to leave Jamaica to participate in the Ascension Football Group Invitational three-day tournament in the Cayman Islands.

The inaugural tournament, the brainchild of former Cayman youth national football player Ethan Rivers, is set for January 30 to February 1 at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.

The four-team tournament is to also feature Under-14 teams from United States-based clubs Inter Miami and New York Red Bulls and the Cayman Islands national Under-15 side.

The Inter Miami U-14 team is expected to include the sons of Argentine football legend Lionel Messi (Thiago Messi) and iconic Uruguayan footballer Luis Suárez (Benjamin Suárez), marking a valuable opportunity for local and international player connections.

Cavalier will have their own Christian Foster, the son of Cavalier club Chairman Ryan Foster. The young Foster is expected to light up the tournament for the Jamaicans.

Christian Foster has the distinction of being one of the youngest to play in the Inter-secondary Schools Sports Association (ISSA) Manning Cup designated for Under-19 boys when he represented Hillel Academy. So far, he has nine goals from five games in the ISSA Under-14 competition.

Ryan Foster, the head of delegation for the Cavalier outfit to Cayman, told the Jamaica Observer that this tournament is another avenue that the club will use to boost the development of its youth players.

“At some point in the future they will form part of the next generation of talent for the club as well as the country. We will be able to not only showcase our talent as a club but will be very competitive, and in fact, we are going there to win and showcase that Cavalier and Jamaica are also producing world-class talent,” Foster pointed out.

“The club has won three Premier League and Caribbean Club Championships in recent times, so our reputation will be on display. The tournament is also a good opportunity to have scouts look at our talent and to explore collaborations with them in the future,” he added.

Cavalier are to open the tournament against New York Red Bulls on Friday at 6:30 pm before taking on Inter Miami on Saturday and the Cayman Under-15s on Sunday.
