Kendrick Lamar becomes most awarded rapper in Grammy history
Kendrick Lamar is now the most-awarded rapper in Grammy history, surpassing the long-standing record held by Jay-Z.
According to Los Angeles Times, Lamar entered Sunday’s Grammy Awards ceremony with 26 wins, overtaking Jay-Z’s total of 25 after securing the award for Best Rap Album for GNX during the pre-telecast ceremony. By the end of the night he had 27 wins.
The rapper led nominations this year with nine nods and collected several major awards throughout the evening. In addition to Best Rap Album, Lamar won Record of the Year and Best Melodic Rap Performance for Luther, Best Rap Song for TV Off, and Best Rap Performance for Clipse’s Chains & Whips.
With his win for Luther, Lamar also became the first rapper to claim Record of the Year twice, and the first male artist and first rapper to win the category in consecutive years.
The milestone marks a standout period for Lamar, who opened 2025 by headlining the Super Bowl halftime show, making history as the first rapper to perform solo on the NFL’s biggest stage.
Last year, Lamar performed at the Grammys with his diss track Not Like Us, which earned five awards, including Record and Song of the Year.
