Fi We Children calls for ‘full investigation’ after Munro student drowns in St Thomas
KINGSTON, Jamaica —The Fi We Children Foundation (FWCF) has called for a “full investigation” following the tragic drowning of 16-year-old Munro College student Kamal Reynolds in St Thomas.
Reynolds, who is from St Elizabeth, disappeared on Wednesday after experiencing difficulties during a swimming outing at Shallay Beach in St Thomas with other students. It has been reported that Reynolds was taking part in a school outing as part of the football team when the incident occurred.
His body was recovered by residents on Thursday.
Commenting on the death, FWCF said the heartbreaking incident underscores the critical responsibility owed to children placed under the care and supervision of schools, coaches, and other institutions.
“While the circumstances surrounding this tragedy remain under investigation, the concerns raised by Kamal’s family warrant a thorough, transparent, and independent examination. FWCF calls on the relevant authorities to conduct a full investigation to determine the events leading to Kamal’s death, assess whether adequate supervision and safeguarding measures were in place, and identify any necessary reforms to strengthen child safety.”
The group also said in light of concerns raised by residents about the emergency response, FWCF also calls for a review of existing marine rescue protocols, including response times and the availability of trained divers and Coast Guard personnel during water emergencies.
“We stand in solidarity with Kamal’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time and urge that every effort be made to prevent similar tragedies in the future,” FWCF said.
